Frequently
Asked Questions
Ayurveda is an ancient healing practice of India, dating back to over 5000 years. Ayurvedic treatments are deeply nourishing and powerfully effective in their ability to purify toxins and harness the body’s natural intelligence to tune it back to balance and optimal health. Ayurveda today is the most widely accepted, practiced and flourishing indigenous system of medicine not just in India but globally too, recognized and accepted as a safe and effective adjunct to Western Medicine. Practitioners of Ayurveda in India are certified and undergo state-recognized, institutionalized training.
Ayurvedic wisdom advocates that each person is born with a unique genetic make-up called prakruti. Maintaining a healthy prakruti is core to wellness of both the body and mind and this is what Ayurveda seeks to achieve. An individual’s prakruti comprises three primary doshas or bio-energies known as Vata, Pitta and Kapha. Each individual possesses the three doshas in a unique combination.
A fast-paced, often stressful modern life however may cause our prakruti to get impaired, resulting in an imbalanced prakruti - referred to as vikruti, that becomes the root cause of all disease and illness. Ayurveda aims to correct this imbalance to help achieve disease-free, lasting good health. While healing and disease prevention are an important aspect of Ayurveda, its therapies and practices extend far beyond just treating the visible illness, to encourage a holistically and balanced lifestyle devoid of excesses.
Ayurvedic medicine bases itself on the unique combination of the three doshas to find the underlying cause of a health imbalance and seeks to bring the body back to good health through lifestyle modifications: in diet and inclusion of yoga and meditation alongside prescribed Ayurvedic therapies and herb supplementation. Ayurveda, thus is a comprehensive wellness system that encompasses all aspects of life, health and wellbeing. To put it in simply, Ayurveda enables the body to heal itself, naturally and effectively.
Whether you are struggling with an internal or external body ailment, pain or inflammation, are low in energy, fatigued, lacking focus, suffering anxiety or a weak metabolism, Ayurveda can help re-align your body and mind to enable a healthier and happier you. The goal of Ayurveda is to: prevent disease, restore total health, promote longevity and enable a calm state of mind that supports control over response to stress triggers and helps develop self-awareness.
Yes, Ayurveda is safe for most people, however its advised that Ayurvedic therapies should be undertaken and Ayurvedic herb medicines consumed only as prescribed by a qualified and experienced Ayurvedic Physician. This healing system offers numerous health benefits, however it may not be beneficial or suitable in specific health situations and conditions. Therefore, prior knowledge of the medical history of the treatment seeking individual is essential to ensure safe and effective healing. We at Ayurvedagram Bali take health precautions very seriously, hence advise that you inform us beforehand in case of any medical conditions such as high blood pressure, heart conditions, allergies, physical disabilities or ailments.

Abhyanga massage is generally safe and suitable for most individuals. But it is always recommended to discuss it with your Ayurvedic doctor to find out which oil works best for you and any other precautions you might need to take. At Ayurvedagram, Bali, you will have a detailed assessment by an expert Doctor to ensure you can undergo Abhyanga.
Various oils can be used in the Abhyanga massage depending on individual health need, dosha (unique constitution) and preferences. Commonly used oils include sesame, coconut, almond and herbal oils that are infused with specific herbs for additional therapeutic benefits.
The duration of an Abhyanga massage session may vary, but generally lasts between 60 minutes. During the massage, factors such as individual health concern, desired wellness goal and muscular endurance help determine the intensity, duration and area of specific focus.
Abhyanga is deemed safe, but is best avoided immediately after meals, during the early stages of fever, and in case of individuals ailing with congestion. The treatment requires extra caution during early stages of pregnancy, hence it is advised to inform the Ayurvedic Physician about your condition before the commencement of the massage.
The frequency of Abhyanga massage may vary depending on individual need and preference. While it is maybe weekly regime for some, others may indulge in a daily Abhyanga. Consulting with an Ayurvedic practitioner or therapist can help determine the most suitable frequency for your needs.
Abhyanga massage can be combined with other Ayurvedic therapies for a more comprehensive wellness experience. It is often paired with Steam Bath Therapy (Swedana) and also serves as a Purvakarma or preparatory therapy to Panchakarma.
